Scio, OR
You can look forward to a rip-roaring good time at Roaring River County Park in Oregon's scenic Willamette Valley. Bring family and friends to fish and picnic in the 28-acre park named for the river that runs through it. Make it a festive occasion by reserving one of the three large group picnic shelters that come equipped with electricity and water. Ramp up the fun factor with dunk tanks, bounce castles and inflatable slides that may be brought in, with special-use permits.
Anglers will appreciate the Roaring River, known for its bounty of cutthroat trout, coho salmon and steelhead. A fishing pond is perfect for younger folk who want to land their own catch of the day. Following a big picnic lunch, what would be more invigorating than a hike on one of the trails or a game on the play field, all of which can be found at Roaring River County Park.
Half a mile away is the Roaring River Hatchery, built in 1924, to raise trout and steelhead. Like the park, it is open all year to visitors. The nearby city of Scio claims the title of "Covered Bridge Capital of the West," due to the cluster of such structures. Tour by bike or car to appreciate the architecture. Take part in a tradition more than 75 years old, the Linn County Lamb and Wool Fair. During the event, scheduled for the third weekend in May, you can admire the best in sheep, goats and lambs, and enjoy the Northwest Champion Sheep Dog Trials, entertainment and contests. Your plans for a day at Roaring River County Park are sure to be met with a roar of approval.
